INTRODUCTION
Riphah Institute of Media Sciences (RIMS)
is the constituent institute of Riphah
International University (RIU), Islamabad.
It is established with the aim to produce
leaders in the field of media production,
media education and research in the
region.
COLLABORATION
WITH UNIVERSITY OF BEDFORDSHIRE, U.K
Riphah Institute of Media Sciences (RIMS)
offers unique blend of east and west
in the form of collaboration with the
University of Bedfordshire UK (UOB).
RIMS has close affiliation with Department
of Art & Design of UOB which is
ranked 3rd in United Kingdom. Every
year two faculty members of UOB, UK
visit RIMS and take regular classes
and training sessions to help students
develop futuristic and professional
outlook on media functions.
With the launching
of the undergraduate programmes in January
2007, the university plans to provide
conducive environment for learning as
well as research and development in
Media Sciences leading to MS, M. Phil.
and Ph. D. This overseas partnership
will allow the graduates of Riphah Institute
of Media Sciences to benefit from the
expertise of regular faculty from the
University of Bedfordshire. The students
will also have a choice to spend final
two (2) years there.
Various programmes
are designed for Capacity Building and
Human Resource Development in order
to equip Pakistani students with necessary
knowledge and skills needed for professional
career.
The university programmes
on one end is providing the students
on opportunity to explore latest and
most modern technological advancements
of west while on the other end it triggers
the minds of our pupil to compare western
thoughts with Islamic heritage. RIMS
offers a hi-tech environment for learning.

The four-year bachelor’s
programmes would be split into two halves
of 2 years each. Students will be studying
for the initial two years in Pakistan
at RIMS, later on they will have option
to join University of Bedfordshire,
UK to complete their further two years
of studies. The University of Bedfordshire,
in this case would award the degree.
The students who wish to complete their
programme at RIMS will be awarded with
the degree of Riphah International University.
Students who take the
single BS (Hons) Media Production
will gain a broad understanding of media
institutions, technologies and products
together with practical experience of
working in one or more media forms such
as animation, journalism, multimedia,
photography, radio, and video. The programme
aims to provide students, at a practical
level, with the planning production
and editing skills to be able to make
imaginative and effective productions
while at an intellectual level it integrates
these skills with a critical, historical
and theoretical understanding of the
media as a profession and social force.
The BS (Hons)
Television Production course
enables you to explore all aspects of
the moving image and learn the key production
skills. You will need to turn your ideas
into realized projects. The course enables
you to explore digital moving image
production across a wide range of interconnected
disciplines-from narrative fiction and
documentary production; while at the
same time developing your skills in
cinematography, sound, design, editing,
lighting, script writing, directing
and producing.
The MA Mass
Communication seeks to develop
students’ talents in writing,
speaking, management, human and public
relations, and critical thinking with
an aim of preparing them for a broad
range of communication. A mass media
professional has to both knowledgeable
as well as appropriately skilful. This
is possible only through systematic
education and training in a good media
institution before stepping into the
media world.

RIMS has tailored the
Mass Communication programme to the
changing needs of society and relevant
to the goals of our students. Specialisation
is offered to enable the students develop
particular skills and abilities in one
or more academic disciplines.
Post Graduate Diploma in TV
Production, PGD Leading to MA TV Production
gives the learners an opportunity to
study media at postgraduate level. They
will be provided with all the necessary
theoretical instructions and practical
skills, which give them a chance to
make quality TV productions following
the industry standards and practices.
Students, enrolled in this program,
will have an option to get a diploma
or an MA degree. Those who spend one
year at RIMS will get a post graduate
diploma, while others (completing two
years) will get a degree of MA TV Production.
Students who have completed 42 required
credit hours PGD can shift their credits
to MA TV Production within a time period
of two years.
Students
with post graduate diploma will also
have an option
to join MA TV Production at the University
of Bedfordshire,
UK. Duration of masters at UOB will
be term and a half.
LINKS WITH MEDIA
The institute has established
strong links with the media industry,
including leading TV Channels, Production
Houses, Radio Stations, News Agencies,
Newspapers and Magazines. Students may
benefit from these links either through
internships or placements in later stages.
Students' visits to the industry will
be an important part of the curriculum.
This will provide students with opportunity
to assist and workwith some leading
media professionals. This interaction
will be helpful in enhancing their creative
abilities and skills regarding real
media environment.
A series of guest lecture
by top media icons including, Directors,
Producers, Writers, Actors, Performers,
Anchors, Comperes, Cameramen, Editors
and other leading professionals in the
industry will be a regular part of RIMS
activities.
